Title: Hello all
Post by: kooshman7 on August 06, 2019, 09:49:09 am
I wish I knew the native language to know for certain all that is said, and to say what I would like to say. I've been a long time fan of Semogue brushes, and the recent LE brush I saw has my eye. Semogue LEs in my estimation are the best valued brushes when it comes to an LE brush hands down. The regular models are wonderful as well and don't get near as much love in the forums that they do.

I've seen a few names on the boards here that are familiar to me that others will likely recognize. I've chosen kooshman7 for my moniker for most forums; the only difference is I chose koosh7 for one forum.  My first name is Joe, and I've been wetshaving now for 9 years, and I've been down the brush rabbit hole extensively. There are few brands I don't have experience with. I find I typically prefer the old manufacturers for shaving brushes, and am not a large fan of the various knots you can buy to put in a brush from various sources. I just don't find them as refined as Semogue, Simpson, Plisson, Shavemac, or any other well known brand. I left the list short as there are too many to list. I love just about any brush out there. My preference lies in 3-band, but I've delved deeply enough into 2-band to match most enthusiasts there. I'm not a fan of pointy knots, but other than that any shape is fine really. Lately the biggest change to my preferences in regards is I've gravitated back to large brushes. I'm sure in time my interest will shift back to smaller brushes, and I have plenty there too.

I can't say I have a preferred shaving setup totally, but close to it in several areas:

Chosen brush of the day
Chosen lather fuel of the day (Simpsons previous shaving cream is excellent; Proraso also on those hot days)
Georgetown G20 Second Scuttle
Feather AS-D2 for 1-2 day shaves, a mixed assortment otherwise that I'm testing for heavier growth
Personna Blue Lab razor blades typically with some experimentation thrown in
Proraso Green Pre-shave
Geo F. Trumper Coral Skin Food is a particular favorite, but I mix it up here often
Alum block

It's the shaving brush that I have the greatest attachment and fondness towards in wetshaving, and if you were to see my collection it would be immediately evident. I spend more time reading than anything, but one thing that is universally understood and admired that I can contribute is pictures, and will do so in a short time.

Pictures of your brush collection will definitely be most appreciated.

Hello and welcome, Joe!

I'm guessing you're from the US, from your name and also from your preferred scuttle :) !
Nice to see another fan of Semogue brushes. I live 1 mile away from the Semogue plant (although I haven't had the chance to visit yet) and I am a fan myself.

When you say you prefer 3-band knots, I guess you are refering to Shavemac's. You prefer that to the most known 2-band silvertip? May I ask why?

Hopefully this will insert a photo of most of my Rooneys. The Emillion was sold, but wasn't the heyday Rooney anyhow. Added 2 other gems too since this picture was taken.

Someday I'll get around to taking more photos of what I have. Before I forget, there was a question about why I prefer 3-band Silvertip. In use I have a preference for using it as I enjoy the softness and density of the brush, and I can use it at anytime that I want to. Boar is nice to use, and I have several I enjoy, particularly Semogue. The only dislike I have there is it doesn't retain water well and it can dribble down the handle. The worst in that regard is synthetic. That material is crazy soft, but really too soft. They need more work in replicating the tips and having some presence felt like in 3-band silvertip. Horse hair is a fun alternative and doesn't really have the problem of dribbling water. I enjoy a brown hair I have very much, and would save the white hair when I haven't shaved a few days. The boar/badger mixtures are definitely a viable strategy, and Semogue does that best hands down. I have very soft 2-band Silvertips, and harsher feeling ones, but I can't use them back to back typically. I could get away with it on a few brushes, but not many. Still, they are excellent when you haven't shaved for some time! It's hard to explain my preference. Part of it is functional, but mostly I think it is a mental image association for me of when I think of a brush I think of 3-band badger in best or silvertip. Depending on the brush maker, pure can even sneak into there.

Have you tried the new Plisson synthetic? The Plisson synthetic Evolution? It’s harder in the tips and extremely soft when it sprays. Builds up leather like no other and plisson Says made to replicate the human hair and for me the best brush I’v tried.
Kind regards

I have to laugh as I just picked up a Tigris Perla Samurai today. I don't usually go for the strange handle colors, but I have some here and there that manage to catch my eye. There's a Semogue beauty I got recently I'll really need to remember to share when it arrives. I think it is the first Semogue LE to be introduced unless something before that.

I haven't tried the Plisson Evolution. I'll have to keep that on my radar for some time as the hair does indeed look interesting. I can go overboard on brushes, so I try to control my purchases. When I buy one brush it seems to be quickly followed by several others.

Well ZF-17  is keen on brushes, like you, so you’ll get along.
As for myself I have very few but one is the Plisson Evolution and I just love that brush.

It is indeed XF-17! Just took arrival of it today. It needs to have some neatsfoot oil applied as it has some superficial separation spots appearing. It looks a bit worse than what it is to the naked eye, but under a jewelers loupe you can see it is more of a slight separation. I feel the neatsfoot will help a lot.
